“ True, ” Todd said with a smile. “ Nick, you ’ re not saying much tonight. What ’ s going on in that thick head of yours? ”

“ I was just thinking about my sister Carol. She ’ s kind of going through the same thing, but her situation is a little bit different, ” Nick said.

“ What ’ s her story? ” Brad asked. He appreciated his friends ’

concern and support, but was glad to have the group ’ s attention turned to something else.

“ She ’ s the family genius. She got a degree in fi nance from NYU and started her own business right out of college, which takes guts. I ’ m not sure what she does. Some kind of investment advisor, I think. Anyway, she ’ s a real whiz at the stock market, so she started right away buying this and that. She talks about it when she visits or we talk on the phone, but you guys know me. That stuff goes right over my head, so I just nod along. She and her kids are here visiting our parents, and at dinner last night she said her business went under. ”

“ Really? Why? ” Michael asked.

“ Kind of like Brad, I think. Just economic downturns. It wasn ’ t making money anymore so she closed down. But the good thing is that she ’ s got all these investments, so she ’ s okay.

The family millionaire, in fact. ”

“ Lucky her, ” Brad said wistfully. If the balance in his money market account kept going down, soon he wouldn ’ t even be the family thousandaire.

Several weeks later, Brad sat at the desk in his family room, paying that month ’ s bills and watching his bank balance sink lower and lower. His wife came into the room and sank heavily onto the sofa.

“ Hey, how are you feeling? ” Brad asked.
